249 Writers

Artist collective from Khartoum, Sudan

249 Writers is a creative platform and community of writers, artists, and cultural activists from Sudan dedicated to promoting Sudanese literature and art in all its forms. Founded in 2010, the name "249 Writers" reflects the international dialing code of Sudan (+249) and symbolizes the group's connection to their homeland, as well as their goal of making the cultural voice of Sudan heard globally.

The 249 Writers are committed to fostering literary exchange both within Sudan and across international borders. They provide a platform for both established and emerging writers to publish, present, and engage in open dialogue with a global audience.

Their efforts span various activities such as readings, workshops, literary festivals, and online publications. They create a space where writers can share their experiences and perspectives, which are often shaped by the challenges of political instability, social justice, and cultural diversity. Issues such as women's rights, the effects of conflict, and Sudan's cultural identity are central to their work.

A core mission of the 249 Writers is to enrich and expand Sudan's cultural landscape. In a time of political and social upheaval in the country, the group believes in the transformative power of art and literature. They foster dialogue about the challenges and hopes of Sudanese society and contribute to supporting a young, diverse, and dynamic literary community.

The 249 Writers are not only a platform for creative works but also a catalyst for social change and cultural collaboration, both within Sudan and on the international stage. They play a crucial role in the revival and visibility of Sudanese literature and are committed to amplifying the voices of those silenced by political and social circumstances.

Keyvisual

In 2021, the artist collective 249 Writers participated in the pilot project Planet Africa – Archaeological Time Travel and created an impressive illustration that addresses the theme of Module 3: "Know(ing) how – Agile knowledge and flexible technology." This module explores the remarkable adaptability and practical skills of people in Africa from an archaeological perspective.

The 249 Writers interpreted this theme in a unique way, bringing their creative vision to life through their illustrations. Their art reflects the development and preservation of knowledge and practical skills that have been passed down through generations to overcome the challenges of life in various ecological and social contexts.

The module highlights, among other things, the ability to adapt knowledge flexibly to the changing conditions of the environment. In their illustration, the 249 Writers visually captured the deep-rooted connection between people and their environment.

The work of the 249 Writers contributes to expanding the understanding of the historical and cultural significance of traditional skills and their role in the daily lives of people. Their portrayal brings agile knowledge to the forefront, which is important both for archaeological research and for today’s understanding of sustainability and resource use.

Through their artistic interpretation, the 249 Writers group creates a bridge between the past and the present and encourages reflection on the development and preservation of knowledge in an ever-changing world. Their work raises awareness of the diversity and richness of African cultures and their remarkable techniques of adaptation and survival.
