National Library Rabat

Founding and history

The history of the National Library of Morocco dates back to the years following the country's independence. It was founded in 1962, originally under the name “Bibliothèque Royale” (Royal Library). The library was initiated by King Hassan II to create a central institution for the collection, preservation and provision of knowledge and information for the Moroccan public. However, the first library was quite modest and initially existed in a small building near the palace.

Now known as the National Library, the institution has undergone considerable expansion and restructuring over the years to meet the growing demands of the collection and the needs of the population. The library has evolved from a royal collection to a comprehensive national institution.

The new National Library

In 2008, a new, modern building complex was opened in Rabat to house the library. The building, which was designed by Moroccan architect Rachid Andaloussi, is an architectural masterpiece and symbolizes the fusion of tradition and modernity. The complex comprises several floors and provides space for millions of books, manuscripts and digital media. The building is not only a place of learning and access to knowledge, but also a cultural center that organizes numerous events and exhibitions.
