Planet Africa Opens in Munich

27. Mai 2025 Planet Africa Opens in Munich

"Planet Africa" was opened on 15 May 2025 at the Bavarian Archaeological State Collection in Munich, the second location of the exhibition tour. Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, House of Wittelsbach, gave the opening speech in front of a well-attended audience. The exhibition can be visited in Munich until 28 September 2025.

African drumming by the band Osumare filled the foyer of the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection and framed the opening speeches by the Director of the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection, Prof. Dr Rupert Gebhard, and PD Dr Jörg Linstädter from the KAAK (DAI). Prince Ludwig of Bavaria emphasised the importance of intercultural dialogue and officially opened the exhibition. On this evening, the guests were able to immerse themselves in "Planet Africa" for the first time and receive exciting background information from the team and curators. Some ventured into the giant puzzle, a hands-on station for exploring the continent.

Media representatives had already been invited to a preview of the exhibition on the morning of the opening day and had been informed about the background to "Planet Africa - An Archaeological Journey Through Time".

"Planet Africa" is presented in a new form within the exhibition at the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection. Here, the bright pink key visual by Nigerian artist Enotie Ogbebor dominates under the title "New Perspectives". The team from the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection also added a number of archaeological artefacts from its own collection to the exhibition. In an underground special exhibition room, the bright lighting elements and multi-coloured pictures of the exhibition stand out particularly well.

The Bavarian State Archaeological Collection has organised an extensive programme to accompany the "Planet Africa" exhibition, which includes individual tours and talks, lectures, workshops and a special educational package for teachers and school classes. The complete programme is available here: https://www.archaeologie.bayer...
